Delta-Tubed Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Delta-Tubed Coriolis Flow Meters [ALCM-DT]

Delta-tubed coriolis flow meters by SmartMeasurement use two tubes formed into a triangle shape, or delta, in a parallel arrangement.

Delta-tubed mass flow meters utilizes the Coriolis effect to measure the mass flow rate of a fluid. These tubes are typically made of metal and are vibrated at their resonant frequency by coils. The resonant frequency is the frequency at which the tube naturally vibrates, similar to how a guitar string vibrates at a certain frequency when plucked.

When a fluid flows through the delta tube, it experiences a Coriolis force. This force is created whenever a mass moves radially in a rotating system, such as the delta tube. The Coriolis force causes the tube to deform slightly, with the amount of deformation proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid passing through the tube.

The Coriolis force has opposite effects on the inlet and outlet sides of the tube. This causes the tube to twist, resulting in a phase shift between the vibrations on the inlet and outlet sides. By measuring this phase shift, the mass flow rate of the fluid passing through the tube can be accurately determined.

The deformation of the delta tube due to the Coriolis force is relatively minor. However, it is enough to cause a measurable change in the tube’s resonant frequency. The coils used to vibrate the tube can detect this change and provide the necessary data to calculate the mass flow rate of the fluid.

One of the advantages of using a delta tube flow meter is its ability to measure mass flow rate directly, unlike other flow meters that rely on measuring volume flow rate and then converting it to mass flow rate using density measurements. Delta tubes are also highly accurate and can be used to measure a wide range of fluid types, including liquids and gases.

In summary, delta tubes utilize the Coriolis effect to measure the mass flow rate of a fluid. The forces generated by the fluid passing through the tube cause the tube to deform slightly, which is detected by coils to determine the mass flow rate. This type of flow meter offers high accuracy and the ability to directly measure mass flow rate, making it a popular choice in many industries.
